Floodlights

A floodlight is an artificial light which is used to illuminate a large area of space. Floodlights come in a variety of different styles and can be used for a variety of applications. Floodlights can be used on the outside of the home to deter criminals and illuminate outdoor spaces. Floodlights can also be used for illuminating large sports areas.

Using lighting in the correct way is essential for achieving the look which you desire. The most common type of floodlight is the metal halide floodlight, which is a part of the HID (High Intensity Discharge) family of lamps. This type of lamp will produce a high intensity of light for the size of the unit. The metal halide was created in the 60’s for use in the industrial industry, however nowadays, floodlights are used in both the industrial and residential sectors.

The lamp itself is small in comparison to more traditional fluorescent or incandescent lamps (ones which produce the same level of lighting). This means relatively small reflective luminaries can be used to direct light, making the metal halide suitable for a variety of applications such as outdoor lighting, warehouse lighting and industrial lighting in buildings just to name a few.

Sodium floodlights are another range of popular floodlights thanks to their versatility. There are two different types of sodium lamp which can be used, high pressure or low pressure lamps.

If you decide to go with a high pressure lamp, then these are usually smaller, having added mercury element inside them, resulting in a dark pink glow when lighting and an orange light when the lamp is fully illuminated.

The high pressure versions are most popular amongst gardeners, along with being used in indoor areas. Many street lights are use these types of lamps.

Choosing a low pressure sodium lamps means that the lamp has a small amount of argon and neon gas along with solid sodium, which is then stored in the borosilicate glass discharge tube. The lamps usually take a little while to warm up, so you will notice a pink/red glow whilst it warms up until it reaches its full bright yellow colour.

Other types of floodlights available include: energy saving floodlights, PIR security floodlights, tungsten halogen, sports floodlighting, architectural floodlights and 110V floodlights.
